Abadir wooden guestrooms
Abadir is an Academy of Fine Arts located in Catania (Sicily). The school is hosted in an old villa that has assumed its present appearance between the end of 1700 and 1840.
The idea was to provide the school with guestrooms in order to encourage more interaction between people from different countries and different backgrounds and to support an expanded research without boundaries in the shared territory of Abadir.
The plot is located in a citrus trees garden. A simple wooden rectangular volume, suspended from the ground, hosts six individual studios -10 squares meters each with a personal bathroom- where invited artist can study, create, work and sleep. Studios are connected by a long corridor opened to the garden, a common space where exterior light filters in through a screen made of wooden splints. In the other side, the rhythm of the wooden façade is broken by a regular sequence of windows belonging to the private space of the studios.
This is how we imagined building: a sustainable, flexible and cost-effective system. Quiet work spaces plunged into a dense citrus trees garden, silence and shadows.
